Mission

Space for Human Rights (SEHR) aims to improve the suitability of satellite data and – information for use in monitoring, compliance and accountability in Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.

SEHR promotes the cooperation between the legal, technical and business-oriented actors. In its activities, the organisation is working together with its academic and national partners and with European and international organisations such as the Agency for the EU Space Programme (EUSPA) the European Space Agency (ESA) and the International Criminal Court, ICC.

SEHR is seeking the attention of European and national policymakers to include this specific use of satellite data and – information in future policy documents and implementing activities.

SEHR started in 2022 with an Initial Paper and organized with its partners a multidisciplinary seminar in 2023 to identify areas for further research and improvement. Further research was implemented in a ‘Thesis Lab’ organised in cooperation with the Leiden-Delft-Rotterdam Universities in The Netherlands. This led to a second seminar in June 2024.

The expertise built up by the SEHR network led to the first dedicated user consultation on the use of satellite data and -information. This consultation was organised by EUSPA in close cooperation with SEHR in October 2024.
